When to Quit
The Sunk Cost Fallacy
"I've already spent 3 years on this." The universe doesn't care. The market doesn't care. The money/time is gone. The only question is: Is the next hour worth investing?
The Dip vs. The Dead End
Seth Godin talks about "The Dip" - the hard part before success. But there is also "The Cul-de-sac" - a dead end where you work hard but go nowhere.
The Diagnostic Test
Ask yourself these 3 questions:
- Am I learning? (Even if we fail, will I be smarter?)
- Is the market responding? (Are people angry? Angry is better than indifferent. Indifference is death.)
- Do I still care about the mission? (Or am I just trying to save face?)
If the answers are No, No, No... quit. Quit fast. Quit loud. And start something new. Time is your only non-renewable asset.
