Salary Negotiation for Introverts
The Fear
You think negotiation means conflict. You think they will pull the offer. Truth: They spent $20,000 interviewing you. They are not going to pull the offer because you asked for 10% more.
The Rule of Silence
The biggest mistake introverts make is over-talking to fill the silence. Recruiter: "We can offer $120k." You (Nervous): "Okay that sounds good I mean I was hoping for more but reasonable..."
Stop.
The Script
Recruiter: "We can offer $120k." You: [Silence for 5 seconds]. "Thank you for the offer. Based on my research and the market rate for this role, I was expecting something closer to $140k." [Silence again].
Do not justify. Do not apologize. Just state the number and wait. The person who speaks first loses.
Leverage
You have no leverage if you are desperate. Always interview with multiple companies. Even if you want Company A, get an offer from Company B. "I really want to join you, but Company B offered $135k. Can you match it?" This is not aggression. It is market dynamics.
