The Death of Serendipity

The Problem

In an office, you bond while waiting for the coffee machine. You bond walking to lunch. On Zoom, you join at 9:00:00 and leave at 9:30:00. It is purely transactional. This erodes trust. You don't know these people. They are just 2D pixels.

Tactics to Re-Humanize

  1. The First 5 Minutes: Do not start the meeting immediately. Spend 5 mins on "weekend talk". It feels inefficient. Do it anyway.
  2. Co-Working Hours: Open a Zoom channel called "Library". Muted. Just people working together. It reduces isolation.
  3. Offsites: You save money on rent. Spend it on travel. Fly everyone together twice a year. 3 days of face-to-face builds 6 months of trust currency.

Mental Health Check

As a leader, you must ask: "How are you really?" Remote work hides depression well. You have to look harder.
