Transitioning from Maker to Manager: The Calendar Audit

As a dev, an empty calendar is bliss. As a manager, an empty calendar means you aren't doing your job. The painful shift.

Maker vs Manager

The Paul Graham Concept

Maker Schedule: Needs 4-hour blocks of deep work. A single meeting at 2 PM ruins the whole afternoon. Manager Schedule: Lives in 30-minute blocks. Switching context is the job.

The Identity Crisis

New managers feel unproductive. "I didn't write any code today. I just talked to people." Reframe: Your output is no longer your code. It is the team's code. If you spend 1 hour unblocking a junior dev, and they write 10 hours of code, your leverage is 10x.

Calendar Hygiene

  1. Protect Maker Time: Do not schedule meetings for your devs in the morning. Keep mornings clear.
  2. Office Hours: Instead of being interrupted all day, hold "Open Door" time from 4-5 PM.
  3. Async First: Does this need to be a meeting? Or can it be a Notion doc?

Respect the Maker Schedule, or you won't have any Makers left.
