The Art of the Cold Ask
Why They Ignore You
Busy people want to help. But they hate homework. When you email: "Can we grab coffee? I'd love to pick your brain," you are giving them a homework assignment. You are asking them to:
- Find time in their calendar.
- travel to a coffee shop.
- Figure out what questions you should be asking.
- Structure the conversation.
The "Low Friction" Rule
Make it impossible to say no.
Bad: "Can we chat?" Good: "I have one specific question about [Topic]."
The Script
Subject: Question about [Specific Problem]
Hi [Name],
I'm a huge fan of your work on [Project]. I'm currently building [Product] and hit a wall with [Specific Problem].
I tried [Solution A] and [Solution B], but they failed because [Reason].
How did you solve [Similar Problem] at [Their Company]?
No need to reply if you're busy. Even a one-sentence pointer would be amazing.
Thanks, [Your Name]
Core Insight
Why This Works
- Context: Shows you did the work ("I tried A and B").
- Specific: It's not "how do I grow?" It's "how did you solve X?".
- Low Pressure: "No need to reply" actually increases reply rates.
Respect their time, and they will give you their expertise.
